About Café Cherrapunjee
A restored British-era dak bungalow transformed into a heritage café and boutique stay in the heart of Meghalaya.

A Place with a Past
Over 100 years old, Café Cherrapunjee began as a British-era dak bungalow serving travelers between Shillong and Sohra. Over time, it became a government rest house before slowly falling into disrepair.
Restored and reimagined in 2013, the property was transformed into a heritage café and boutique stay focused on sustainability, local culture, and warm Khasi hospitality.
“The walls here don’t just hold roofs; they hold a century of whispers from the mist.”
Preserving the charm of the original bungalow and honoring its architectural lineage.
Supporting local livelihoods through hospitality and bridging travelers with residents.
Celebrating the Khasi culture, food, and landscapes that define the Abode of Clouds.
A Story Still Whispered Today
Local folklore speaks of a mysterious sighting above Mawkdok in 1967, when villagers reported seeing an unidentified object near the old dak bungalow.
Though never officially explained, the story remains one of Meghalaya’s most intriguing legends — adding another layer of mystery to Café Cherrapunjee.
